The spectral needle flickered, its movement sluggish and ghostly as it dragged across the wheel. It stuttered over the standard categories, finally jerking to a halt on a jagged, obsidian-black wedge marked only by a pulsating question mark.
"A hidden class?"
Ethan’s pulse hammered against his ribs.
The question mark bled into a new shape—a symbol reminiscent of the Greek letter 'φ', but twisted into something far more lethal. The vertical line was sharpened into a double-edged blade, radiating a palpable, chilling intent.
[Congratulations! You have obtained the Class: Shade (Unique)!]
[Shade: The one and only. Born of the void, a manifestation of the dark. You are the Reaper in the shadows.]
[Class Passive 1: Shadow Affinity — Stealth duration is doubled.]
[Class Passive 2: Unseen Presence — +1 Stealth Tier.]
[Class Passive 3: First Strike — Attacks made from outside the enemy’s field of vision deal double damage.]
Ethan stared, a slow grin spreading across his face. "The God of Solo-play."
In his past life, there had been rumors of a Shade player, but the man had been hunted down and eliminated early in the game. No one truly knew how the class scaled in the late game, but these three passives alone were enough to ensure his dominance.
In the world of Godsfall, survival was the only metric that mattered.
At the beginning, most players chased raw damage, but they soon learned the brutal truth of the system. Death in Godsfall didn't just mean a trip back to a graveyard; it cost you half of your remaining Lifespan.
Lifespan was everything. It was your health, your currency, and your ticket to power. You could trade it, earn it by slaughtering monsters, or burn it to manifest in-game gear and skills into the real world. To lose half of it in a single moment of carelessness was a death sentence.
"Survival is damage," Ethan whispered. With the Shade’s kit, he wasn't just surviving—he was hunting. Double damage from stealth? It was a nightmare scenario for any opponent.
He checked his starting skills.
[Shadow Veil (Inferior): Enter stealth for 8 seconds. Attacking breaks the effect. Next attack (Veil-Breaker Strike) deals +30 bonus damage. Cooldown: 30 seconds.]
[Backstab Mastery (Inferior - Passive): Attacks from behind deal 10% increased damage.]
Standard 'Inferior' grade trash. Every player started with these base-level tools.
"With my class passive, that 8-second stealth becomes 16," Ethan calculated. "The cooldown is 30 seconds... still 14 seconds of vulnerability. Not quite enough for a permanent loop."
But then, the Scepter of Judgment—the artifact he had carried through his rebirth—began to glow. As his class finalized, the system triggered a reaction from the hidden treasure.
[Triggering Scepter of Judgment... Randomizing Top-tier Talent...]
[Congratulations! You have obtained the Talent: Infinite Evolution!]
[Infinite Evolution: Primordial-tier (Ethereal Grey). Solo kills grant a chance to earn 'Evolution Points' (EP) to upgrade skills.]
(Note: You automatically gain 5 EP every 24 hours. Solo Boss kills grant 100% EP drop rate.)
[Current EP: 5]
Ethan blinked, stunned. "Primordial-tier?"
The quality was a strange, misty grey—a color he had never seen in nine years of playing. It didn't fit the standard white, green, blue, or even the gold of Immortal-tier. It felt... ancient.
"Let's see if this 'Evolution' is worth the hype."
He focused on Shadow Veil. A prompt appeared: Spend 1 EP to evolve Shadow Veil?
He didn't hesitate.
[1 EP consumed. Remaining: 4.]
[Shadow Veil (Inferior → Common): Stealth duration 8s → 12s. Bonus damage +30 → +60. Cooldown 30s → 28s.]
Ethan’s eyes widened. With his Shade passive, the duration was now 24 seconds. He was only 4 seconds away from a permanent stealth loop.
"Again," he muttered, the excitement rising in his chest.
[2 EP consumed. Remaining: 2.]
[Shadow Veil (Common → Bronze): Stealth duration 12s → 16s. Bonus damage +60 → +90. Cooldown 28s → 26s.]
The math clicked into place instantly.
A 16-second base duration doubled to 32 seconds. The cooldown was only 26 seconds.
"Infinite stealth," Ethan breathed. "At level one."
Moreover, that +90 bonus damage was deceptive. Because of his Shade passive, an attack from stealth doubled all damage. That +90 became +180. In the early levels of Godsfall, most Warriors or Mages were lucky to have a total attack stat of 30. He was walking out of the gate hitting like a truck.
He turned his attention to his second skill.
[1 EP consumed. Remaining: 1.]
[Backstab Mastery (Inferior → Common): Damage from behind +10% → +15%.]
"A 5% increase? If I keep pumping points into this, I can reach 100% or higher. Double damage from the class passive, double damage from Backstab... I'll be able to one-shot tanks."
Ethan felt a surge of cold confidence. In his previous life, items and skills were fixed. If a skill dropped as 'Common,' it stayed 'Common' forever. He was now holding a tool that defied the very laws of the world.
"Time to go."
He had 1 EP left, but the next upgrades required 3 for Shadow Veil and 2 for Backstab. He would have to earn more by hunting.
A grey input box materialized in the air.
[Please enter your codename.]
In Godsfall, names were unique identifiers. Ethan raised a hand and traced a single word in the air, the ink as black as the void he had chosen.
Shade.
The smoke of the interface dissipated.
[Codename Confirmed: Shade.]
[Entering The Forsaken Realm...]
The darkness of the character creation void dissolved, replaced by the weight of a physical body. Ethan felt his boots hit cobblestone.
The air was cold, smelling of damp stone and old wood. He stood in the center of a ruined town square, bathed in the pale, sickly silver of a moonlight veil. This was Shellcroft—one of the millions of 'Safe Zones' in the Forsaken Realm.
A few other players were appearing around him, draped in basic black initiate robes, looking around in a daze. There were no NPCs here; Godsfall didn't use programmed bots. The inhabitants of this world were intelligent beings from fallen civilizations, and they didn't waste their time with "newbies" who had zero tradeable Lifespan.
[Welcome to Shellcroft.]
[This is a Peaceful Zone. Monsters cannot enter, and PvP is disabled.]
[Current Lifespan Decay Rate: 1x.]
Ethan ignored the system fluff and opened his stat panel.
[Codename: Shade]
[Class: Shade]
[Level: 1]
[Bound Lifespan: 75 Years]
[Tradeable Lifespan: 0]
[Strength: 10 (+3)]
[Constitution: 10 (+3)]
[Agility: 10 (+8)]
[Spirit: 10 (+5)]
[Stat Points Available: 5]
His jaw tightened. "These hidden class modifiers are insane."
A standard Warrior might get +3 Strength and +3 Constitution. He was getting bonuses across the board, with a massive +8 to Agility and +5 to Spirit.
In the early days of his previous life, everyone dumped their points into Strength or Spirit, desperate for higher damage numbers. It was a rookie mistake.
Ethan didn't hesitate. He dumped all 5 of his free points into Agility.
In Godsfall, Agility governed movement speed, attack speed, and skill casting speed. The monsters here weren't like the brainless AI of Earth's MMOs; they were fast, vicious, and capable of tearing a slow player to shreds in seconds.
"Damage is a luxury. Speed is a necessity," Ethan whispered to himself.
With his Bronze-tier Shadow Veil granting him +90 flat damage, he already hit harder than anyone in the zone. He didn't need Strength. He needed to be the ghost that no one could catch.
He looked toward the town gates, past which the dark woods of the Forsaken Realm waited. It was time to start the harvest.
